I must have heard this one hundred times from both predecessors and advisors: “As much as possible, NEVER go deep into business with friends or family - particularly when you’re only starting out.”
Although it could be ridiculously unfair to suggest that dealing with a family member or a buddy would lead you to be taken advantage of, there’s a much deeper reason into this useful advice. Perhaps you believe that the greater part of persons closest to you will want to see you be successful and provide you with assistance along the way, but the plain reality is - your warm market has ICE in their veins.
In sales, your warm market includes family, close friends and affiliates whom you’ve developed some kind of link with, as opposed to your cold market that comprises mostly of total strangers that can turn into prospects and buyers. It truly is primary intuition to contact individuals closest to you whenever you go into business. The thing is that one or more of those nearest to you do not want to see you succeed. This is a well established fact and you're not exempt from this simply because you believe you've got a large loving family and very caring friends. We can take a moment to dispute this through lunch and supper, but that won’t transform a thing. There'll always be persons in your life who will feel insecure when you create a daring move toward success, and unexpectedly, they’re the persons nearest you in most cases. They’ll suck the life out of you by their critiques and remarks which will always keep you contemplating WHY?
The answer is quite simple though - Misery TRULY loves company. More than likely these people are in a muddle, and although letdowns and misery are an occasional aspect of life, you'll find those that come across difficulties whenever they attempt to come out and improve their life conditions. So they remain inside their comfort zones and stay with individuals in similar roadblocks. The moment YOU elect to escape that circle for your BIG PUSH towards success, they feel vulnerable.
When faced with these scenarios, the great thing you can do is to always have that astounding “WHY” hovering over your head. Instead of centering on WHY your loved ones feel like this towards the choices you make, think about WHY moving forward is important, WHY it is vital that you just do business, or WHY it is critical that you achieve success. Having this form of “Nailed WHY” will bring you over the holocausts of judgments and damaging energy arising from the people dearest to you.
When you decide to take the bumpy road to success, there is always the chance of fractured and damaged connections along the way. Don’t find yourself winding up with the NFL Club (“No Friends Left Club) - rather, get fantastic instruction from a predecessor or mentor in a selected business niche. Getting to be effective in your business will involve making blunders in the process, so it is helpful advice to make a few mistakes with people you don’t know. Once your business starts taking a lead and the pay checks come in, return to close friends and family. Believe it or not, you won’t even have to give them a call - they’ll be sprinting towards you when they hear the good news. That’s among the simplest and plainest truths in life.
Bear this in mind - you can always find partners, prospects and new customers anywhere else, however, you can't ever replace family members and bosom friends. So instead of firing up your warm market simply because it’s an apparently less complicated job (so it seems in the beginning), ESTABLISH YOUR SUCCESS WITH YOUR COLD MARKET. Once you have systematically succeeded in doing so, your warm market shall be raring to find out how you exactly made things happen.
I assure you - you’ll enjoy a happier Thanksgiving Dinner this season when you do this.
